Review: Top Gear Apocalypse

Top Gear Apocalypse DVD

With Top Gear in the title you know what to expect without reading the back of the box, however this is a grave misconception.

Top Gear’s brilliance comes from its trio of hosts and the balance they bring, Hammond and May balance off Clarkson.

For some reason, and I assume it’s because he was too busy making his own DVD for Christmas, Clarkson is lacking from this heavily scripted DVD. And his absence is significantly felt.

The DVD is set in a post nuclear war scenario exploring the impact this may have on motoring. Included in the set-pieces are driving blacked out cars to resemble a nuclear winter, a new form of MOT which is essentially a giant robot wars and remote controlled car racing. All three felt as though they were ideas for the main show which were dropped due to the fact that they just weren’t funny or original.

Intermingled in these poor set-pieces are Dashboard Spot the Difference (which is actually quite a genius idea, but taken too far and loses any comedy value) and ideas on what car would be the best car to drive if there was only 1 barrel of petrol left, meaning Hammond and May take out some very nice supercars, which they both seem to agree on are good choices. It’s during this piece you really realise the brilliance Clarkson brings to Top Gear, he has differing opinions and so brings a level of thought (I never expected to write that!) and argument to the process, normally with some witty remarks thrown in.

As with Clarkson: The Italian Job DVD, this comes with a digital copy which is of a reasonable standard for portable use but wouldn’t replace the DVD for home use.

If you’re toying between this and Clarkson: The Italian Job, I would recommend the latter and wait for this to fall in price post Christmas.
